Ah, good ol’ summertime!

Who doesn’t love the sounds of swimming pool splashing and kids screaming, the scent of sunscreen, and the taste of a refreshing Arnold Palmer under the scorching sun?

During the summer months, with kids home from school, it’s nice to enjoy a slower pace and schedule lots of time for fun.

But then there’s also the challenge of keeping momentum going on your business. If you’re like many writers and speakers, it’s easy to lose focus with so much other stuff going on, especially if you don’t have an external deadline.

On one hand, you have a message to get out into the world. Every day you learn about another task you need to put on your Trello board and your email box fills up faster than you can empty it.

But on the other hand, you also have tiny minions yelling, “I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream!” And you have to admit that some chocolate peanut butter fudge sounds better than being stuck at your desk on a sunny day.

But what if you can have both this summer?

Five Tips For Keeping Your Business Momentum In the “Lazy” Days of Summer

• Remember Your Why
What drives the passion you have for your message? Who needs to hear it and why? Considering the needs of our audience and the ways we can serve them motivates us to keep our momentum going.

• Set Goals
If you already set business goals for the calendar year, great! Now is a good time to go back and review them to see if you’re on track. Revise, as necessary. If you don’t have current goals, the kickoff for summer is a great time to create some. Write them down, make them doable, and start small. Every little step counts toward a bigger step.

• Throw Rewards in the Mix
One of the best ways to avoid FOMO (fear of missing out) while you’re working away is to look forward to a reward for completing a goal. Whether it’s an iced latte for a smaller goal or a weekend getaway for finally finishing that memoir you’ve worked on for two years, you’ll be more eager to complete the task if you’re looking forward to something fun.

• Find Inspiration
Reading success stories of others helps us envision our own successes. Who do you admire? What have they accomplished? If you have a specific goal, find someone who’s already accomplished it (or a similar one) and find out how they did it.

• Team up with Like-Minded People
Many facets of a communicator’s job require solitude. Some days when we’re by ourselves, it’s easy to think what we’re doing doesn’t really matter. But when we work with others who have similar goals, we’re inspired to move forward.

That’s where Communicator Academy’s Summer Business Kickoff Challenge comes in. We want to come alongside you this summer and help you build your business, and have some fun while we’re at it too!

By accepting the challenge, you’ll find support with each of the 5 ways to stay motivated listed above.

Here’s How It Works

1. Join us in our private Facebook Group if you haven’t already done so.

2. Download this PDF to get a list of summertime business challenge items. Since all of us are at different stages in building our businesses, this list allows each of us to choose items that will move our own business forward. You can choose quick tasks or longer ones—whatever you need for the next building block of your business.

3. Every Monday (in the Facebook Group), we’ll put up a new thread where you’ll let us know what you’re working on that week in the comments.

4. On Fridays (also in the Facebook Group), come back to celebrate your accomplishments with other writers and speakers.

So, what about it, communicators? Are you ready to lace up your running shoes (erm…slip on your flip-flops) and get moving this summer?

Let us know in the comments that you’re in. And don’t forget to make sure you’re a member of the Communicator Academy private Facebook group.
